I am angry, sad and deeply disturbed by the allegations against the Senate President’s husband, and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to those who were violated and intimidated.

Sexual assault is totally unacceptable.

I agree with the Senate’s decision to promptly appoint an independent investigator.  Based on the results of the investigation, appropriate action should be taken to prosecute any criminal activity, otherwise address the findings and protect against similar behavior in the future. Leveraging influence and power to extract sex or to silence those assaulted is reprehensible.

The abuse of power and sexual harassment on Beacon Hill and in other professional settings across our country manifest a sickness in our culture. Our current system for reporting, investigating and enforcing sexual harassment, discrimination and assault are deeply broken and must be fixed. I pledge to do whatever I can to make meaningful, systemic change to better protect those who feel voiceless in the face of these inexcusable abuses of power.
